Tiger Attack Video

May 2004 - Authorities in the Assam Province of Northeastern India are trying to subdue a large tigress that has recently become a cattle lifter. They trace her to a paddy field and try to dart her but miss...the sound of the rifle enrages the big cat to the extent that...

...she charges and leaps over twelve feet in the air to attack the people atop the female elephant - knocking a couple of men down to the ground with her. At that time, fortunately for the forest staff, the elephant did not panic and was brave enough to restrain the tigress under one of her feet while the cat roared and struggled violently - within seconds the tigress was free again and this time managed to disappear for good into the forest. The elephant driver lost three fingers of his left hand but his colleagues on the ground were lucky to have avoided fatal injury. Had the elephant spooked and run away like the rest - the angry tigress could easily have wiped them out before escaping.

What is interesting is that whilst the elephant held the tigress under her foot (not shown in the video) there was another attempt to dart her that also missed the animal. Obviously the person filming the event was too shocked to continue as well. Just goes to show the psychological impact of an angry tiger's charge over human beings. If experienced forest officials can be rattled like this by a cornered tiger - ordinary people stand no chance whatsoever against the biggest of the great cats if they decide to attack us...fortunately they seldom do...

Wow--that scared me just watching it...I wonder how/why the elephant was able to stay so calm...
